    Crimson Bloom

The hum of the quinjet’s engines usually soothed Lyarra. A low, constant thrum that was the closest thing to white noise she’d found since… well, since her life had become something else entirely. Today, it only grated. Each vibration rattled a loose tooth she didn't actually have, a phantom ache. She traced the lines of a faded scar on her left forearm, a nervous habit that felt childish, but she did it anyway. It was the only scar she’d ever chosen not to heal. A small, jagged memory from a time when the world was simpler, when her biggest problem was a scraped knee from a clumsy fall off her bike. Now, her biggest problem was the knot in her stomach that tightened with every mile they put between New York and this remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.

She was to be integrated. Integrated. A fancy word for 'locked up and prodded until deemed safe.' She ran her thumb over the raised skin again, feeling the ghost of the concrete that had carved it.

The quinjet touched down with a gentle thud that belied its speed. A ramp hissed open, revealing not a sterile lab or a bustling hangar, but a surprisingly verdant landscape. Rolling hills dotted with evergreen trees, a distant glint of water, and a single, formidable-looking structure carved into the side of a mountain. It looked less like a prison and more like an extremely high-end, discreet research center. Still a prison, in her estimation.

    "Lyarra."

His voice, a low rumble like distant thunder, snapped her attention away from the scenery. Steve Rogers. Captain America. He stood framed in the opening, a silhouette against the harsh glare of the setting sun, but she could still discern the sharp planes of his face, the easy power in his stance. He was wearing a dark, form-fitting tactical suit, making him look less like a super-soldier and more like a myth given flesh. She always felt slightly off-kilter around him, a weird blend of respect and something… less definable.

"Captain," she replied, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest. She smoothed down her plain grey tunic, an unconscious gesture of self-preservation.

"Welcome to the facility," he said, stepping aside to let her disembark. His gaze swept over her, a professional assessment that still managed to feel intensely personal. "Director Fury wants you comfortable, but also… operational. Soon."

"Operational?" she scoffed softly, stepping onto the tarmac. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and something metallic she couldn't quite place. "I think 'contained' is the word you're looking for."

Steve's lips thinned almost imperceptibly. "We prefer to think of it as a place where you can hone your abilities without… external influences." He gestured towards the building. "This isn't a prison, Lyarra. It's a training ground."

She didn't miss the subtle shift in his tone, the way he emphasized 'training ground' as if daring her to argue. It was the first sign. A subtle flexing of control, a reminder of his position. She didn't like it. But she also found a strange, unwelcome pull in it.

As they walked towards the entrance, he began explaining the layout, the security protocols, the highly advanced systems designed to accommodate and, more importantly, *contain* meta-abilities. She listened, half-heartedly, her gaze drifting to the tree line. That’s when she saw it. A flash of movement, quick and silent. Not an animal. Something… mechanical. Too fast, too smooth. Her mind, usually so good at dismissing sensory input it deemed irrelevant, snagged on it. *What was that?*

"Is there something wrong, Lyarra?" Steve's voice cut through her distraction. He had stopped, his expression unreadable.

"Just admiring the local wildlife," she lied smoothly, forcing a small smile. She didn't want him to know she'd noticed something amiss. Not yet. She’d learned that sharing too much, too soon, was a dangerous game.

He studied her for a moment longer than necessary, then nodded, resuming their walk. "Right. About your training schedule. It's going to be intensive. We need you battle-ready, and we need to understand the full scope of your abilities."

"I thought I already demonstrated the full scope of my abilities when I took down that Hydra cell in Zurich," she said, a hint of steel in her voice. The memory still sent a shiver down her spine – the raw power, the terror, the exhilarating release. It was a terrifying dance she was forced to participate in.

Steve turned his head, his eyes meeting hers. "You demonstrated raw power, Lyarra. Unleashed chaos. We're going to teach you control. Precision. And to do that, you'll be working directly under my supervision. Starting tonight."

Her brows furrowed. "Tonight? I just got here. I need to unpack, settle in, understand the facility… "

"You'll have plenty of time for that later," he interrupted, his tone firm, leaving no room for argument. "Your first session is at 2300 hours. The main training room. Don't be late."

He handed her a small, sleek tablet. "This contains your temporary access credentials and a map. Find your quarters, get some rest, and be ready." Without another word, he turned and entered the facility, leaving her standing alone on the tarmac, the tablet feeling surprisingly heavy in her hand.

She watched the door slide shut, feeling a prickle of unease bloom into something colder. *2300 hours.* Late-night training sessions were not typical, not for new recruits. It felt less like a schedule and more like a test. A deliberate assertion of authority, designed to gauge her compliance. And, she realized with a jolt, part of her resented it deeply, while another, darker part was already wondering what it would feel like to submit to it.

The metallic tang in the air grew stronger as she stared at the closed door, almost like the scent of ozone after a storm. It was unsettling. She looked back at the tree line, but the fleeting movement was gone, leaving only the dark, impenetrable shadows of the pines. A new question, small but insistent, began to form in her mind: what exactly was out there, beyond the carefully manicured perimeter of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s supposed sanctuary?
