    The Unbalanced Equation

The music cut out, leaving only the sound of seven bodies gasping for air, the squeak of trainers on the floor, and the low, soul-sucking hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. I hated these lights. I had a theory they were powered by the life force of trainees, which would explain why I felt like a wrung-out dish rag.

I was the eighth. The ghost in the machine.

In the mirror, my reflection was a beat behind the others, a discordant echo. As they hit the final pose—a sharp, defiant crouch—I was still collapsing, my left knee hitting the floor with a clumsy thud instead of hovering an inch above it. My center of gravity was too high, my core not engaged enough to brake the momentum. I knew the mechanics of my failure. Knowing didn't fix it.

Hoseok, even while catching his own breath, had his eyes locked on my flawed form in the mirror. He didn't say a word. He didn't have to. His disappointment was a physical weight in the room.

"Water break," Namjoon called out, his voice rough. He ran a hand through his damp, bleached hair and sagged against the wall, his chest heaving.

I pushed myself up, my knee aching. I grabbed my towel from the bench. It was damp from my last wipe-down, and the texture of the soft, wet terrycloth against my skin made my teeth ache. Vile. I dropped it and reached for my water bottle instead, keeping my eyes on the floor. The silence from the others was worse than any criticism. They had been a perfect, interlocking unit of seven for months. I was the wrench thrown into the works two weeks ago, grinding the gears to a halt.

"From the top of the second verse."

The voice sliced through the heavy air. Son Sungdeuk, the performance director, stood in the doorway, arms crossed. His gaze wasn't on the group. It was on me. He had a way of looking at you that made you feel like you were a miscalculation on a balance sheet he was about to correct.

"The drop is weak," he said, his voice flat. He wasn't yelling. He never yelled. He simply stated facts. "The formation breaks because of Kang Daehyun. It is unsynchronized. It is unacceptable."

A few of the members shifted, studiously avoiding my eyes. Yoongi, however, just watched me from his place on the floor, his expression unreadable, cat-like. He hadn't said more than ten words to me since I’d arrived.

"Again," Sungdeuk ordered. "And Kang Daehyun. Fix it."

He didn’t tell me how. That was the point. If you couldn’t figure it out, you didn’t belong here. We scrambled back into formation, the exhaustion momentarily forgotten under the cold pressure of his stare. Hoseok started the count, and the music blasted again, a physical assault. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat trying to find the rhythm.

We ran it again. And again. Each time, I focused on my core, on the timing, on the angle of descent. Each time, I was a fraction too slow, a hair too clumsy. The seven of them were a tidal wave of motion. I was the piece of driftwood it left behind.

After the fourth repetition, the door opened again. This time, it was Bang Sihyuk.

The atmosphere in the room changed instantly. The air didn't just get heavy; it solidified. Bang PD didn't have Sungdeuk's sharp-edged intensity. He had gravity. The kind that could hold a solar system together or collapse it into a black hole. He stood beside Sungdeuk, watching one full run-through without a word. His silence was louder than the music.

The song ended. We all froze in the final pose, sweat dripping, lungs burning. I had managed not to fall this time, but my form was shaky, my arms trembling. It wasn't good enough.

"Daehyun-ssi," Bang PD said, his voice quiet but carrying to every corner of the room. "Come with me."

The walk to his office was the longest ten meters of my life. He didn't speak. I focused on the scuffed linoleum, counting the tiles. His office was cluttered, smelling of stale coffee and paper. He sat behind his desk, gesturing for me to take the chair opposite. He steepled his fingers, looking at me over them for a long moment.

"The showcase for the broadcast executives is in one week," he began, no preamble. "Debut is not a game. It is not a wish. It is an investment. Right now, you are a bad investment."

I swallowed. My throat was bone dry.

"You have talent. Your evaluation tapes showed that. Your voice is stable, you have a good ear. But this," he gestured vaguely back toward the practice room, "this is the core of the group's concept. Performance. Power. Perfection. You are behind. The whole group is dragged down to your level."

He leaned forward. "I do not have time to wait for you to catch up. Son Sungdeuk believes you are a lost cause. I am giving you one last chance. You have until the final evaluation in three days. If you are not perfectly in sync with the other seven members by then… we will have to reconsider your position."

There it was. The axe, held suspended over my neck. He was a busy man; he wouldn't waste time on a formal warning if he wasn't serious. This was it.

"I understand, PD-nim," I managed to say, my own voice sounding distant.

"I hope you do," he said, already looking down at a stack of papers. A dismissal.

I walked out of the office, my legs unsteady. The hallway seemed to stretch and warp. Three days. It was an impossible deadline. I had been killing myself for two weeks and was still a mess. I stood outside the practice room, hearing the music start up again inside. They were already back at it. Without me. The equation balanced perfectly now that the stray variable had been removed.

Panic, cold and sharp, clawed at my chest. No. I wouldn't fail. I couldn’t. I pressed my back against the cool wall of the corridor, closed my eyes, and focused inward.

    *Status.*

A translucent blue screen bloomed in my vision, invisible to anyone else. It was my secret. My cheat code. The reason a kid from a tiny village with no formal training had even made it this far.

    [Kang Daehyun]

    Level: 3

    Stamina: 18/25

    Vocal: 21/100

    Rap: 12/100

    Dance: 9/100

    Charm: 15/100

    Available Stat Points: 0

The numbers were pathetic. A Dance skill of 9. It was a miracle I could even stand upright. For two weeks, the System had been silent, offering no quests, no opportunities to earn points. It only provided the cold, hard data of my inadequacy.

But desperation must be its own kind of catalyst. As I stared at the damningly low Dance stat, new text scrolled across the bottom of the screen.

[Alert: Imminent risk of expulsion detected. Emergency Quest generated.]

    My breath hitched.

    [Quest: The Unimpressed Critic]

[Description: The path to group harmony is blocked by silent disapproval. Your performance is not the only thing being judged. Earn a single, sincere compliment from Min Yoongi before the final evaluation.]

    [Time Limit: 72 hours]

[Reward: +1 Dance Point, Fragment of a Star's Memory (1)]

    [Failure: Expulsion from debut team.]

I stared at the words. A compliment? From Min Yoongi? He barely looked at me. He was the quietest, most intense member, a coiled spring of creative energy and biting cynicism. Getting a sincere compliment from him would be harder than mastering the choreography. It was absurd. It was impossible.

And what in God's name was a 'Fragment of a Star's Memory'?

I opened my eyes, the blue screen dissolving. The music inside the practice room stopped. I could hear their exhausted chatter, the sounds of them packing up. My chance was in there. My problem wasn't just my feet anymore.

My gaze fell on the door. Through the small rectangular window, I saw him. Min Yoongi, pulling a black hoodie over his head, his face stark and pale in the fluorescent glare. He wasn't just a teammate. He was a lock I had to pick. And I had three days to find the key.
