Error Code 404: Idol Not Found

The music stopped. Silence, thick and heavy, dropped into the room, broken only by the squeak of his trainers on the floor and the ragged saw of his own breathing. Lee Ji-Hoon’s reflection stared back at him from the wall of mirrors, a dozen tired clones mimicking his collapse. His sweat-plastered shirt felt like a second skin made of ice.

He hated this room. Not all of it, just one specific part. On Mirror #3, three panels in from the left, a single, greasy thumbprint marred the otherwise pristine surface, right at eye-level. It had been there for a week. Cleaning staff missed it. The other trainees were blind to it. But for Ji-Hoon, it was a screaming flaw in the universe, a constant, smudgy accusation that perfection was impossible. He pushed a damp strand of black hair from his forehead, his gaze fixed on the offending mark. Another two hours, and he still couldn’t nail the eight-count transition in the new choreo. The thumbprint mocked him.

A wave of dizziness washed over him. He fumbled for his water bottle, his fingers closing instead around the small, drawstring bag at the top of his duffel. The plush, cheap velvet sent a shudder straight up his spine. He recoiled, snatching his hand back as if burned. Disgusting. He didn’t know why, but the texture felt like a thousand tiny spiders crawling over his skin. His aunt had given him the bag for his birthday. He’d only put his spare phone charger in it because throwing it away felt crueler than subjecting himself to its repulsive touch twice a day.

He blinked, and the room tilted. The thumbprint on the mirror swam.

And then a blue box appeared in front of his face.

    [SYSTEM INITIALIZING…]

    [Welcome, User Lee Ji-Hoon!]

Ji-Hoon squeezed his eyes shut, then snapped them open. The box was still there, a crisp, translucent rectangle of light hovering about two feet from his nose. It looked like a video game UI, all clean lines and sans-serif font.

*Right. That’s it,* he thought, a cold sort of calm settling over him. *I’ve finally broken my brain. Low blood sugar. Dehydration. Sleep deprivation. Pick one. Pick all three.*

He stared at it. The text didn’t waver. He waved a hand through the space it occupied. Nothing. His fingers passed right through the light, meeting no resistance, causing no ripple.

[MAIN QUEST: DEBUT AS A LEGENDARY IDOL]

    > Description: You have been chosen. Climb the treacherous ladder of the entertainment industry, hone your skills, and capture the hearts of millions. Failure is not an option.

    > Reward: ???

[NEW USER GIFT PACK (1) HAS ARRIVED IN YOUR INVENTORY. OPEN?]

    > [YES] / [NO]

“Inventory?” Ji-Hoon whispered. The word sounded absurd in the silent room. This was a certifiable, five-star delusion. He’d heard of trainees hallucinating from the pressure, but he always assumed it would be something more dramatic. Not a tidy blue pop-up.

He was just tired. He’d get some water, go home, sleep for twelve hours, and wake up sane. He reached for his duffel bag again, his eyes flicking away from the floating text.

The door to the practice room hissed open.

Ji-Hoon froze, his heart jackhammering against his ribs. Min Yoongi stood in the doorway, a black beanie pulled low over his brow. He wasn’t looking at Ji-Hoon, but was instead frowning at the light panel by the door.

“Still here?” Yoongi’s voice was a low rasp, gravelly with late-night fatigue. He didn’t sound surprised, just weary. He was a ghost in the HYBE building, a creature of the studio who only emerged for coffee or necessity.

Ji-Hoon scrambled to his feet, bowing a full ninety degrees. “Sunbae-nim! I’m sorry. I was just finishing.” The blue box was still in his field of vision, hovering just to the left of Yoongi’s unimpressed face. He prayed it wasn't visible to anyone else. He prayed he wasn't currently bowing to a hallucination of his senior.

Yoongi’s gaze finally slid to him. His eyes, sharp and intelligent, took in Ji-Hoon’s exhausted state in a single, sweeping glance. He said nothing about it. His eyes flickered to the floor where Ji-Hoon had been sprawled.

“Don’t break,” Yoongi said flatly. “The floor’s expensive.”

Then, without another word, he turned and walked away down the hall, his footsteps silent. The door hissed shut, plunging Ji-Hoon back into silence. He’d seen that look before. The one that said, *I see more than you think I do, and I am not impressed.* Yoongi hadn’t asked if he was okay. He never did. He just stated a fact and left you to deal with the implications.

Ji-Hoon’s breath escaped him in a rush. The blue box remained. Constant. Patient.

He couldn't go home. He couldn't face the dorm. What if it followed him? What if one of the others saw him talking to thin air? The shame would be unbearable. He needed to figure this out. Alone.

On his own initiative, an idea sparked. There was a place. The old equipment storage room on the fourth floor, tucked behind the vocal booths. No one ever went in there. It was full of defunct speakers from the early 2000s and boxes of promotional CDs for groups that had disbanded a decade ago. It was a graveyard. It was perfect.

He slung his bag over his shoulder, ignored the velvet pouch, and fled the practice room, the blue box bobbing faithfully in front of him. He found the storage room door unlocked, as always. The air inside was stale, thick with the smell of dust and old plastic. He flicked on the single, bare bulb overhead, casting long, distorted shadows.

Okay. Time to face the madness. He looked at the box.

[NEW USER GIFT PACK (1). OPEN?]

    > [YES] / [NO]

Taking a deep breath, Ji-Hoon focused his intent on the affirmative. *Yes.*

The box shimmered, and a new one replaced it.

    [CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE RECEIVED:]

    > - STAT POINT +1 (ALLOCATE)

    > - ‘KEEN EYES’ BUFF (PASSIVE, 24HR)

    > - ‘HYDRATION’ POTION (CONSUMABLE)

A small, clinical-looking bottle, identical to the ones from the company vending machines, materialized out of thin air and clattered onto a dusty cardboard box beside him. Ji-Hoon stared at it. It was real. Solid. He could touch it. He picked it up. The plastic was cool, the water inside sloshing. This wasn't a hallucination.

The sheer, undeniable reality of the bottle was more terrifying than the blue box.

His foot slid on something. Looking down, he saw he’d kicked a battered spiral notebook that had fallen out of a collapsing box labeled ‘TRAINEE EVALS - 2012’. Probably old notes. Useless. He bent to nudge it back into the pile, but it fell open.

The page was filled with frantic, handwritten Hangul. But it was the drawing in the margin that made Ji-Hoon’s blood run cold.

It was a sketch, done in blue ballpoint pen. A rectangle. With clean lines and blocky, sans-serif text inside it.

At the top of the page, in the same handwriting, was a single, looping sentence.

*It calls itself The System, and I think it’s going to kill me.*

Ji-Hoon’s fingers trembled as he traced the outline of the drawing. It was a perfect match. The fonts, the shape, the layout. He wasn't the first. He wasn't alone. And he had just willingly taken a gift from the very thing this ghost of a trainee had feared.

The bottle in his other hand suddenly felt very, very heavy.
