    Unsolicited Upgrade

The words on the page were a parasite, burrowing into his brain. *It calls itself The System, and I think it’s going to kill me.* Ji-Hoon dropped the notebook as if it were on fire. It landed with a soft thud in the dust, the sketched System box staring up at him like an open eye.

He backed away, his hand clutching the ‘Hydration’ potion. The bottle, once a miracle, now felt like evidence of a crime. His crime. He had invited this thing in. He had taken its gift. The water sloshing inside sounded less like refreshment and more like a countdown.

His breathing hitched. Panic, cold and sharp, clawed its way up his throat. He had to get out. He had to tell someone. But who? What would he say? *There’s a ghost in my vision offering me stat points, and a trainee from 2012 said it’s a murderer?* They wouldn’t just kick him out of the program; they’d have him committed.

The air shimmered. A new blue box materialized, eclipsing the dusty room.

    [CLAIM REWARD?]

    > [YES] / [NO]

Ji-Hoon stared, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. It was ignoring him. It was ignoring the dead boy’s journal. It dangled another treat in front of him, a bigger, brighter one. The logic was insidious, a predator’s calm patience. *You took the first gift. You know it works. Why stop now?*

He thought of the greasy thumbprint on Mirror #3. He thought of his own reflection, always slightly off, never quite sharp enough, never the one the evaluators’ eyes lingered on. He was good. He wasn't great. He practiced until his joints screamed, but there were boys who were born with faces that did half the work for them. He was not one of them.

    *It’s going to kill me.*

But what was this life, anyway? A slow death by a thousand cuts of ‘not quite’? A decade of chasing a dream only to wake up at thirty with nothing but bad knees and a box of unsold promo CDs?

Failure was a kind of death, too.

His gaze flickered between the notebook on the floor and the glowing box in the air. A choice. This was a real choice. Not which brand of instant noodles to buy, but what kind of person to be. The one who runs from a monster, or the one who tries to tame it?

He took a ragged breath. His intent focused, hard as a diamond. *Yes.*

    Another box appeared.

    [REWARD CLAIMED: ‘VISUAL RECALIBRATION’ PACKAGE]

[+1 STAT POINT HAS BEEN AUTOMATICALLY ALLOCATED TO ‘VISUAL’]

    [INITIATING AESTHETIC OVERHAUL…]

The world vanished in a flash of white-hot pain.

It wasn't a gentle process. It was violent. It felt like every bone in his face was being broken and reset by an invisible, brutalist sculptor. A grinding pressure started in his jaw, forcing it into a new, sharper angle. His cheekbones felt as if they were being pushed up and out, stretching the skin over them taut. He gasped, but no sound came out. His whole body locked up, a prisoner to the System’s renovation.

A searing heat pulsed behind his eyes, the sensation of them being pulled wider, reshaped in their sockets. The world dissolved into a blur of agonizing light and shadow. He thought he screamed. He was on the floor, convulsing, the dust of the storeroom coating his tongue. This wasn't a gift. It was an invasion. It was overwriting him, erasing the face his mother gave him and replacing it with something else. Something *better*.

Then, as suddenly as it began, it stopped.

Silence returned, deeper this time. Ji-Hoon lay on the filthy floor, twitching. The air smelled of ozone and old paper. The single bare bulb overhead seemed ten times brighter than before. The ‘Keen Eyes’ buff, he hazily realized. He could see the delicate filament glowing inside the glass, every swirl and imperfection in the bulb. He could see individual dust motes dancing in the stale air, each a tiny, perfect sphere.

Slowly, shakily, he pushed himself up. His clothes felt wrong. The collar of his t-shirt was too tight around his neck. The sleeves of his hoodie felt short, ending a full inch above his wrist bone. Had he grown?

A final blue box hovered patiently.

    [AESTHETIC OVERHAUL COMPLETE.]

    [NEW SUB-QUEST ISSUED: FIRST IMPRESSION]

    > Description: Your vessel has been upgraded. An asset is only valuable if it is seen. Return to Practice Room 3 and be observed.

    > Reward: +50 EXP

    > Failure Penalty: ‘Visual’ Stat temporarily reduced by -5.

A penalty. The System had never mentioned a penalty before. The threat was clear: use the gift, or we’ll make you uglier than you were before. There was no going back.

He had to see. He fumbled for his phone, his fingers clumsy. They looked longer. Leaner. He swiped to the camera app, reversed the view, and lifted it to his face.

The person on the screen was not him.

It couldn’t be. The face staring back was a masterpiece of cruel, symmetrical beauty. The jawline was a razor’s edge. The lips were full, perfectly shaped. The tired puffiness under his eyes was gone, replaced by smooth skin that made his eyes themselves seem larger, deeper, and darker. They held a startling intensity he’d never seen in his own reflection. It was his face, but stripped of every flaw, every trace of boyish roundness, every hint of exhaustion. It was the face of an idol at the peak of his fame, not a trainee subsisting on convenience store kimbap.

It was the face of a stranger wearing his skin.

A wave of nausea and vertigo washed over him. He had asked for this. He had clicked ‘YES’. He had wanted an edge, and the System had given him a new identity.

He touched his cheek. The skin was smooth, unfamiliar. The phone in his hand felt alien. He looked from the impossible man on the screen to his own hands. His hands. They were his. Weren’t they?

His gaze fell on the notebook on the floor. He scrambled for it, his new, longer fingers closing around the worn cover. He had to hide it. This was his secret. His sin. He shoved it deep into his duffel bag, his knuckles brushing against the repulsive velvet of the charger pouch. The familiar revulsion was a small, steady anchor in the sea of wrongness that was his new body.

He zipped the bag shut. The potion from the Novice Pack was still in his other hand. He stared at it. What would this do to him? What other parts of him would it decide to ‘recalibrate’? He tucked it into his pocket, a cold weight against his thigh.

He had to go back. The quest demanded it. *Be observed.*

Ji-Hoon stood, his new frame feeling awkward and unbalanced. He took a step, then another. He walked out of the storeroom, leaving the dust and the silence behind, and headed for the mirrors of Practice Room 3. He felt like a ghost piloting a new body, every nerve ending screaming with alien sensation. The thumbprint was still there, he knew. But he wondered if he would even care about it now that the face looking back at him was the most perfect, terrifying thing he had ever seen.
