RWBY x destiny 2Adventure

    Crusader-1

The Ghost’s words were a wall of ice. *The man you knew is… not here right now.*

Ruby felt her breath catch, her lungs suddenly too small for the cold air. Beside her, Yang’s fists, still sheathed in Ember Celica, clenched so tight the hydraulics groaned. This wasn’t their Jaune. This was something else wearing his name like a stolen coat.

The figure in the armor seemed to embody that emptiness. He stood, a statue of exhaustion, his head tilted slightly as he processed Ruby’s whispered question. Or maybe he processed nothing at all. The blue visor was a blank, impassive void.

Then, the last of his borrowed strength gave out.

It wasn't a dramatic fall. It was a slow, heavy collapse, like a mountain giving way to erosion. His knees buckled first, the white and gold armor creaking. The massive rotary cannon slipped from his grasp and thudded to the dirt. He pitched forward, landing on his hands and knees in a posture of complete surrender. His helmeted head hung low, inches from the ground.

“Jaune!” Yang and Ruby cried out in unison, their voices sharp with alarm.

They surged forward, but the Ghost zipped between them and its charge, its single blue eye glowing with fierce protectiveness. “Stay back! He’s not hurt, he’s… depleted. The Light is dim.”

“The what?” Weiss demanded, stepping forward, Myrtenaster held at a low ready. “You keep using that word. You need to start explaining. Now. What have you done to him?”

The Ghost rotated, its metallic shells fluttering. It looked from the collapsed Titan to the four huntresses, then to the villagers who were watching from a safe distance, their faces pale with shock and confusion. It seemed to weigh its options.

“He is my Guardian,” the Ghost finally said, its voice losing its defensive edge and taking on a tone of weary pedagogy. “I am his Ghost. I found him.”

“Found him where?” Blake asked, her voice low and steady. Her eyes were fixed on the motionless giant.

“Here. On this world,” the Ghost replied. “Weeks ago. In a crater, deep in the Emerald Forest. He was… gone. No life, no Aura, no memory. Just a body waiting for the end.”

A collective chill ran through Team RWBY. The Emerald Forest. Near Beacon. That’s where he fell.

“My purpose is to find those who can be saved,” the Ghost continued, its light pulsing softly. “Those who can wield the Traveler’s Light as a weapon. I searched for a long time. Then I found him. I brought him back.”

Ruby’s mind reeled. Brought him back. From death. It was impossible, a fairy tale. But the proof was kneeling in the dirt right in front of her.

“So you… revived him?” Weiss’s voice was laced with disbelief. “With this ‘Light’?”

“Yes. He is Risen. A Guardian. But the process leaves… gaps. Everything he was before is gone. He woke up with nothing. A blank slate.”

The silence that followed was profound. The villagers began to whisper amongst themselves, shepherding their children away from the strange scene. They were safe now; the Grimm were gone. The saviors were now engaged in a baffling, quiet conflict of their own.

“Then why,” Ruby said, her voice trembling, “why did you call him Jaune?”

The Ghost drifted closer to the man’s helmet, its light caressing the scarred metal. “He had nothing. No name. No past. But when I found him, I scanned the wreckage of his old armor. A piece of a scabbard, I think. It was shattered, but one word was still etched into the metal, faint but clear.” It paused. “Jaune.”

Yang swore under her breath, a harsh, choked sound. It wasn’t a memory. It wasn’t a sign that their friend was still in there. It was a label on a box. A nameplate on a tombstone that this little machine had mistaken for a welcome mat.

“So you named him,” Blake stated, her face a mask of dawning comprehension. “You gave him his own name back, and he has no idea what it means.”

“I gave him an anchor,” the Ghost corrected, a hint of pride in its voice. “A place to start. In the Guardian operational logs, he needed a designation. I chose ‘Crusader-1’. It… fit. He woke up, I told him the Grimm were evil and that people needed protecting. He picked up the first weapon he could find and hasn’t stopped since.”

The Ghost turned its eye back to them. “You are the first people he’s encountered who weren’t screaming for help. For the past three weeks, he has fought. He does not sleep. He does not eat or drink; the Light sustains him. He moves from one Grimm infestation to the next, drawn by the scent of fear. He has been systematically clearing the region between here and the coast, one village at a time. This was just the next stop on his crusade.”

Yang looked at the collapsed form of her friend. Not sleeping. Not eating. Just fighting. An automaton powered by an alien energy, driven by a two-sentence mission statement from a floating robot. The sheer, awful loneliness of it hit her like a physical blow. He wasn’t Jaune Arc, goofy, lovable, loyal. He was Crusader-1. An asset. A weapon.

“The hit he took,” Blake murmured, thinking back to the Ursa. “It tore his armor, but he didn’t even bleed. He has no Aura.”

“Guardians don’t have Aura,” the Ghost confirmed. “Our Light shields us, heals us. But it can be broken. He’s been running on empty for days, pushing himself to the absolute limit. His Light is nearly extinguished. That’s why he collapsed.”

Weiss stepped closer, her analytical mind overriding her shock. She knelt, not too close, and studied the patch jobs on his armor. Scraps of metal, some of it clearly from salvaged farm equipment, were riveted over cracks in the pristine white plate. “This armor… where did it come from?”

“It is his,” the Ghost said simply. “When a Guardian rises, the Light provides. It re-forges them, body and armor, into what they need to be. A shield for the weak. He is a Titan.”

A Titan. Crusader-1. Guardian. The new words felt like grit in Ruby’s mouth. They were sterile, technical terms for the hollowing out of her friend. She looked at the man on the ground. She could see the tattered blue cloth at his waist, the one with the twin-headed eagle. It was the symbol of the Arc family, wasn’t it? The one piece of him that had survived. He wore it without knowing what it was. A family crest worn as a meaningless scrap of fabric.

She took a step forward, then another, until she was standing over him. She reached out a hesitant hand, wanting to touch his helmet, to feel something real.

The Ghost didn't stop her this time.

Her gloved fingers brushed against the cool, scarred metal. There was no response. No flicker of recognition. Just the dead weight of a man lost inside himself. She could see the damage from the Ursa claw on his pauldron now—deep gouges that had scraped the gold paint away, revealing the dark, alloyed metal beneath.

“We have to help him,” she whispered, her hand dropping back to her side.

“He needs to rest,” the Ghost said. “His Light needs to recharge. It will take time.”

“He can’t stay here,” Yang said, her voice firm. She scanned the darkening woods around the mill. “More Grimm will come. We need to get him somewhere safe.”

Ruby looked at the empty shell of the boy who had followed her to Beacon, who had trained with her, who had fallen trying to save a world he loved. He was a hero. And this… this was his reward? To be resurrected as a ghost, a soldier without a past, fighting a war with no end in sight?

    No. She wouldn’t accept it.

The man they knew wasn't here *right now*. The Ghost’s words echoed back, but this time they sounded different. Not like a final judgment, but a statement of fact. A temporary condition.

She looked from the collapsed Titan to the tiny, floating machine. “You said you brought him back,” she said, her voice finding a new, hard edge. “If he’s a blank slate, then he can be written on. We knew him. We can help him remember.”

The Ghost’s eye swiveled to focus solely on her. The air grew tense again.

“I… don’t know if that’s possible,” it said slowly. “Or if it’s wise. The man he is now is strong. Purposeful. The memories of his past life… they might break him.”

Ruby shook her head, a fire igniting in her chest, burning away the cold shock. “The man he is now is empty.”

She looked down at the white helmet, at the form of her friend. He wasn't just a Crusader. He wasn't just a Titan. He was Jaune. And they were going to bring him home. Not just his body. All of him.
