The world narrowed to the sound of shattering porcelain. The coffee tray slipped from Tobirama’s numb fingers, crashing to the floor in an explosion of ceramic shards and dark, spreading liquid. Steam hissed against the cool wood. For a moment, no one moved. It was as if the sharp, violent noise was the only thing that could exist in the wake of such profound, silent absurdity.
Then, Hashirama blinked. “Tobi…?”
The name, spoken with such gentle confusion, shattered the paralysis. A low chuckle rumbled from the corner of the room. It was not a sound of mirth. It was the sound of a predator finding a weakness.
Madara pushed off the wall, his arms unfolding. The slow, deliberate movement drew all the attention in the room. His dark eyes were fixed on Tobirama, a predatory glint dancing within them. The corner of his mouth hitched into a smirk that was all sharp angles and cruel satisfaction.
"Well, Senju," Madara purred, his voice a low drawl that scraped against Tobirama’s raw nerves. "It seems the cat has your tongue. And a few other things besides."
Heat, potent and unbearable, flooded Tobirama’s face. He could feel it creeping up his neck, a furious blush that felt like a brand. His hand flew up instinctively, not to his head, but to slam the office door shut, the heavy wood booming in the sudden quiet. A futile gesture. The damage was done. The witnesses were inside the cage with him.
One of the white ears atop his head twitched, reacting to the slam, an involuntary betrayal. Madara’s smirk widened.
"Brother, what happened to you?" Hashirama finally found his voice, striding forward. His face was a mask of alarm and wild curiosity. He completely ignored the mess on the floor. "Are you injured? Is this an enemy's jutsu? Your ears—they moved!"
He reached out a hand, his fingers aiming for the base of one of the offending appendages. Tobirama jerked back as if struck. "Don't touch me." The words came out as a low growl, more animal than human. His tail, which had been hanging limply behind him, gave a sharp, agitated lash, slapping against the back of his own leg.
"Fascinating," Madara commented, his gaze tracking the movement of the tail. "Such an expressive creature."
"It was a jutsu," Tobirama bit out, forcing the words through a clenched jaw. He refused to look at Madara, keeping his eyes locked on his brother. If he looked at the Uchiha, he felt he might either combust from sheer mortification or do something incredibly violent. "My research. An unforeseen biological side effect."
"Side effect?" Hashirama's brow furrowed. "You mean… you did this to yourself?"
"It was an error in the seal sequence," Tobirama snapped, his composure fraying. "I was tired. I must have misread my own notes." That had to be it. He was a scientist. There was a logical explanation, a variable he had failed to account for. There was no other possibility.
"Misread your notes?" Madara took another slow step forward, circling the coffee puddle like a shark. "You? The great Tobirama Senju, master of precision, architect of seals so complex no one else can decipher them? You made a simple transcription error?" He let out a soft, disbelieving laugh. "How very… clumsy."
Every word was a perfectly aimed senbon striking at the heart of his pride. Tobirama’s fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles white. The world did not just turn upside down in Madara’s presence; it became a hostile, alien landscape where all of Tobirama's strengths—his logic, his discipline, his control—were rendered useless.
"The jutsu was designed for cellular-level transformation, Brother," Tobirama said, pointedly ignoring Madara’s taunts. "A temporary protein recoding based on a chakra template. The sequence I performed must have contained a corrupted or incomplete template."
"So you meant to turn into a rock, but you turned into a kitten instead?" Hashirama asked, his eyes wide with a dawning, disastrous understanding. He glanced between Tobirama’s stony face and the twitching ears. A smile began to play on his lips. "Tobi, that's—"
"Do not finish that sentence, Hashirama," Tobirama warned, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
Madara stopped his pacing and stood directly between Tobirama and the door. "An interesting development," he said, his tone shifting from mockery to something more calculating. "A Senju, the second-in-command of this village, has lost control of his own body due to an experimental jutsu. What are the other side effects, I wonder? Does it affect your senses? Your combat abilities? Your judgment?"
He was weaponizing it. Turning Tobirama’s personal failure into a matter of village security. It was a brilliant, viciously effective tactic.
"My faculties are unimpaired," Tobirama stated, the lie tasting like ash in his mouth. His hearing was already distractingly sharp; the hum of the village outside the window was a low roar.
"Is that so?" Madara countered. "Your research was on 'Anomalous Forms,' was it not? This certainly qualifies. Perhaps you misplaced more than just a single character. Perhaps you misplaced an entire scroll."
Tobirama froze. *Anomalous Forms*. That was the title of his primary theoretical scroll. How could Madara know that? He hadn't discussed the project's specifics with anyone but Hashirama, and even then, only in passing. The scrolls were in his lab. Unsecured for a few hours while he was at the western gate. The breeze from the window… the disheveled papers…
A new, cold dread washed over him, momentarily eclipsing the humiliation. It wasn't a random mistake. His lab had been entered. His research had been tampered with. And the man who knew the project's title was standing right in front of him, wearing a look of insufferable smugness.
"I am returning to my laboratory to reverse the process," Tobirama announced, his voice flat and cold. He took a step toward the door. Toward Madara.
"An excellent idea!" Hashirama boomed, finally snapping out of his stupor. "You must fix this at once! But… given the unusual nature of this jutsu, and the potential security risk Madara pointed out…" Hashirama looked from Tobirama's murderous glare to Madara's challenging one. He put his hands together in a gesture of placation. "Madara, you will accompany him."
The silence that followed was heavier than a mountain.
"Brother, that is unnecessary," Tobirama said, each word a carefully polished stone of ice.
"I insist," Hashirama replied, his ‘Hokage’ voice settling into place. It was the one tone Tobirama could not argue with. "This is now an official incident. You will be observed until the situation is resolved. Madara will act as my eyes and ensure no further… anomalies… occur."
Madara’s smirk returned, sharper and more triumphant than ever. "As you command, Hokage-dono."
There was no escape. He was trapped. Stripped of his dignity and now his autonomy. Tobirama gave a stiff, formal bow that was an insult in its precision. "Understood."
He turned and strode out of the office, not waiting for a reply. He was acutely aware of every single thing. The whisper of his own robes. The soft, infuriating brush of his tail against his hakama. The sounds of the Hokage tower—the shuffle of papers, a distant cough, the chirping of a bird outside—all were piercingly loud to his new ears.
And behind him, he heard the steady, measured footfalls of Madara Uchiha. They weren't just footsteps. They were the sound of his failure following him, a constant, walking reminder of his humiliation. His private sanctum, his laboratory, was about to be breached by the one person he would have given anything to keep out. The walk there felt like a mile-long tightrope, and the weight of Madara’s observation was a physical force threatening to make him fall.
